Compare the same twelve-month period
Prepaid usually means paying before the usage period; postpaid usually means being billed after service and may include credit checks, device financing, or account-level promotions. Neither label determines the better value. Build a first-year total including service, taxes, activation, required upfront payment, device cost, trade-in value, accessories, and only promotions you can realistically satisfy.
Separate service from phone financing
A postpaid plan may look expensive because it bundles access to device installments or monthly credits. A prepaid plan may require buying an unlocked phone separately. Compare service on its own, then net phone cost on its own. Promotional credits are not cash today and can disappear if you leave early or miss an eligibility condition.
- Net service cost for all lines
- Cash due today
- Net device cost after realistic credits
- Length of any installment or service requirement
- Cost of leaving before credits finish
Read the network-management details
Plans using the same underlying network can behave differently during congestion. Unlimited can still include premium-data, hotspot, video-quality, or roaming limits. Coverage and priority matter most where a network is busy or marginal, so test the places and times that affect you rather than relying only on a nationwide map.
Price family lines and support
Postpaid plans often use multi-line discounts, while some prepaid brands price each line more independently. The winner for one person may lose for four. Decide whether stores, phone support, account permissions, fraud recovery, smartwatch support, and easy replacement service are worth paying for.
Choose based on flexibility and failure cost
Prepaid can reduce commitment and make service cost easier to see. Postpaid can be competitive for families, device promotions, wearables, or bundled services. The safest choice is one whose normal recurring price fits the budget after introductory pricing ends—and whose exit cost is acceptable if coverage or service disappoints.
