01

Add recurring costs to the purchase price

The shelf price is only the beginning. Estimate annual electricity from wattage, daily operating hours, and the local electricity rate. Then add replacement-filter price multiplied by the number of expected replacements each year. Include separate prefilters or carbon filters when they are required rather than bundled.

02

Use a realistic filter interval

A manufacturer interval is a planning baseline, not a promise. Smoke, dust, pets, construction, fan speed, and operating hours can load filters faster. A washable prefilter may reduce large debris on the main filter, but washing a filter that is not designed for it can cause damage. Follow the exact model manual.

  • Replacement price from an available seller
  • Expected replacements per year
  • Whether carbon and particle media are separate
  • Shipping or subscription requirements
  • Availability of the exact genuine filter
03

Compare clean-air output per ownership dollar

A lower-watt machine is not automatically the better value if it cannot deliver enough clean air. Compare machines that meet the same CADR or air-change target, then compare annual filter and electricity cost. Buying an undersized purifier and running it at maximum speed can be noisier and less useful than selecting adequate capacity.

04

Treat third-party filters as a separate decision

Compatible filters can cost less, but fit, sealing, media amount, odor control, pressure drop, and performance may differ. Do not assume a third-party filter has the same tested performance as the original. If a warranty, certification, or filtration claim matters, verify the exact filter and manufacturer terms.

05

Budget for the machine you will operate

The best planning choice fits the room, runs at a tolerable sound level, has obtainable filters, and stays within the recurring budget. Recalculate when electricity rates or filter prices change. If recurring cost causes the machine to sit unplugged or run with an overloaded filter, the low purchase price did not create good value.
