Ignore the crossed-out number at first
Start with the amount you will pay today. Then compare the same model or plan at other reputable sellers. A reference price can be unhelpful when the item rarely sells at that amount.
Normalize the comparison
Compare equal quantities, model numbers, service periods, and included accessories. Calculate unit price for groceries and consumables, and total contract cost for subscriptions.
- Same model or generation
- Same quantity or unit size
- Same warranty and return rights
- Same billing period and renewal conditions
Include the costs outside the headline
Shipping, required memberships, setup, accessories, installation, financing, and return shipping can erase an apparent discount. For subscriptions, compare the first term and the first renewal separately.
Decide whether you would buy without the countdown
A deal is useful only when the product fits the need and the final price is competitive. If urgency is doing most of the persuasion, pause and save the product details for a later comparison.
